A stroke – also known as a cerebrovascular accident – occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is suddenly cut off. It is a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment and can lead to permanent neurological damage if not treated promptly.

A stroke occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is suddenly cut off. This can be caused by a blood clot blocking a blood vessel, or by a blood vessel bursting. Stroke is closely linked to vascular dementia – repeated strokes can cause gradual brain damage.

Symptoms vary depending on which part of the brain is affected

Stroke symptoms vary but the most common include sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arms or legs – particularly on one side of the body. Other symptoms may include sudden confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, vision loss or a severe headache.

The progression can be rapid and intense

Prompt treatment is essential to minimise damage and maximise chances of recovery. Untreated, a stroke can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening consequences, including permanent neurological damage or paralysis.

Causes of stroke

The most common causes include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, obesity, atrial fibrillation and other heart conditions.

Diagnosis and treatment

To diagnose a stroke, doctors use neurological tests, blood tests and brain imaging such as MRI or CT. Treatment may include medication to dissolve blood clots and a personal safety alarm after stroke.
